Tips on Choosing the Right Present for a Baby

by Alison Lurie

You would think choosing a gift for babies is easy until you go to the store to choose one. There are so many choices, and although they may look similar, the baby gifts can only be appropriate for a certain age.

If you’re confused about looking for the right baby gift, then scroll down to find out more about what you should know before purchasing.

Consider the baby’s age

Baby stuff is grouped into different age ranges: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, and 9-12 months. Toys and clothes for babies above one year old are a whole different category.

If you’re thinking about buying clothes, it’s always best to buy bigger ones instead of their current age. This is because babies tend to have fast development, and they might easily outgrow their clothes. Don’t rely too much on the age label, as babies can be smaller or bigger for their age.

Toy Choices

One go-to choice of gifts for babies is toys. There is no doubt that babies will enjoy them, but you also have to remember some things if you consider giving toys to babies.

  • Choking Hazard

Check if the toy has any separate parts that a baby can swallow. Go for toys that do not require any assembly and are not made from harmful chemicals.

  • Educational Value

It is important to remember that before a child reaches the age of one, they process everything that comes to their senses. Therefore, a toy with bright colors and can easily be held can help a baby’s skills early on in their development.

  • Durability

Babies have not yet developed their fine motor skills, so it is normal to fling around their toys. Therefore, it would be best to choose a gift that cannot be easily broken or bent, not only so that you are assured that it can last but also avoid injury to the baby.

Baby Essentials

If you’re going for practicality in choosing a gift, baby essentials are the way to go. Aside from clothes, there are feeding sets, bath sets, and even hygiene sets like tooth/gum brushes. For more practical gifts, then you can also give diapers and baby wipes.

Baby bottles can be great gifts, too. However, it’s best to buy a bigger sized bottle rather than a small one even during their early months as they will eventually outgrow smaller bottles.

Other Gift Ideas

If you want to be the fun aunt/uncle who goes over the top with gifts, then you can opt for a sound machine or a night light for the baby’s room. A sound machine plays lullaby’s to help make the baby feel drowsy, and the nightlight can be beneficial for both the parents and the baby to avoid having accidents when putting the baby down.

Choosing baby gifts can be a confusing task, even if the baby can’t express if they liked the gift or not. But it is still important to put in extra thought to avoid any accidents around the baby.

For baby parties with gift registries, then it would be easy to choose. However, if they did not, make sure you give a gift that the baby’s parents will surely appreciate.
