Brand Insider: A Look at Nomos Glashütte Watches

by admin

Nomos Glashutte, more commonly referred to as Nomos, is a watch manufacturer with roots in Glashutte, Germany. It may not be considered a global household name, but the brand is surely something that watch enthusiasts love. After all, winning 140 international awards is not an easy feat that just happens to any company. Nomos has gotten awards for various categories, most of them recognizing their commitment to value, quality, and design.

The Birth of Nomos Glashütte

What made Nomos Glashutte and the qualities that propelled this brand to success?

Just two hours south of Berlin, there is a town called Glashutte, located in the foothills of Saxony. Although small, the town is home to a lot of watchmakers like Moritz Grossmann, A. Lange & Sohne, and Glashutte Original. It is pretty safe to say that the heart of German watchmaking industry lies in Glashutte. In 1907, a watchmaking associationthe Deutscher Werkbundwas even founded in the very same town.

Unfortunately, the coming of WWII put the watchmaking industry in Germany at a temporary stop. After the war, Germany was divided in two and Glashutte became a part of the Communist East. The watchmakers of the time were forced to be nationalized, Eventually, operations were halted and the companies ceased to exist. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the watchmaking companies were revived.

A photographer and computer enthusiast by the name of Roland Schwertner decided to create his own watch company that is founded on the history of Glashutte and its watchmaking roots. Many of the old manufactures of Glashutte have since then been sold to Swiss conglomerates, however, Nomos has managed to maintain its independent status.

The Tangente

The 1980s watch trend included chunky, large watches, so Nomos started a revolution in 1991 with the release of its first collection. It included four watches in a Bauhaus style. One of the four watches—the Tetra—has a 29.5mm square case, while the other three have 35mm round cases. The minimalist Bauhaus style enabled Nomos to sell their watches to both men and women, offering pieces that look appropriate on almost any occasion.

The most famous watch from this collection was the Tangente. Its look was inspired by the 1930s Bauhaus watches, specifically the Stowa Antea and Lange designs.  The Tangente’s classic look caught the eye of many watch enthusiasts. Banking on this success, Nomos moved to produce their in-house movements.

Nomos Glashutte as a Global Brand

Nomos saw a growth of 24% in 2020. This is a great feat since many watch manufacturers are losing market shares due to competition. At present, Nomos now produces more watches than any other watch brand in Germany. The brand now also caters to the international market, exporting to countries like the US, Great Britain, and many others totaling more than 50 nations around the globe.
